A device used by the ship's operator to communicate operating instructions to the engine room. From the bridge, the ship's operator issues commands to the engine room to use the engine (forward, astern, full speed, half speed, slow speed, slow speed, stop, etc.), and the engine room directly communicates a confirmation. Usually, commands are written on a fan-shaped dial divided into radial sections, and when the transmitting handle is moved to the required position, a signal bell rings, and the receiver also gives the same instructions and a confirmation response. Currently, a system is adopted in which the engine is controlled directly from the bridge.

操船者が機関室に運転指令を連絡するために用いられる装置。操船者は船橋(せんきょう)（ブリッジともいう）から機関室に前進，後進，全速，半速，低速，微速，停止などの機関の使用を指令し，機関室より確認応答を直接連絡する。通常扇形の文字板を放射状に区画して指令を記し，発信用の取手を所要の位置に動かすと号鈴が鳴り，受信機も同一の指示と確認応答をする。現在では船橋から直接機関を制御する方式が採用されている。
