A city in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate in western Germany. Population 24,700 (2000). A key transportation location upstream of the narrow Bingerloch section of the Rhine and at the confluence with the Nahe, a tributary on the left bank. A fort was built here in Roman times, and a stronghold in the Middle Ages. It is a railway junction, and there is a freight yard in the Bingabrücke district. With many famous wine-producing regions nearby, it is known as a wine trading center. It is the departure and arrival point for sightseeing boats in the Rhine Gorge, and a tourist base.
