Quetzalcoatl - Quetzalcóatl (English spelling)

An important cultural complex in ancient Mexico, it is (1) the name of a god who bestowed culture on the people in the religions and mythologies of the Aztec, Toltec, and other cultures, (2) the name of a priest-king who worshipped the god Quetzalcoatl in the Toltec Empire that flourished from the 10th to 12th centuries, and (3) the name of a literary subject sung about in poetry written in Cuautitlán and other parts of ancient Mexico. It means "feathered serpent."

The origin of Quetzalcoatl in the sense of (1) can be traced back to several centuries before Christ. Originally a water god closely related to agriculture, in the Teotihuacan culture (2nd to 7th centuries), Quetzalcoatl attracted people's faith as a "feathered serpent" and a temple to Quetzalcoatl was built. Quetzalcoatl was also worshiped in the subsequent cultures of Xochicalco, Toltec, and Aztec, and transformed into a deity with complex attributes. In Nahuatl texts created during the Aztec period (14th to 16th centuries), Quetzalcoatl is compared to the god Venus who lives in the fourth of the thirteen layers of the sky, and is also depicted as one of the four children born to the supreme gods Tonacatecutli and Tonacacihuatl (also called Ometecuhtli or Omecihuatl), who created the universe, humans, and acquired corn. The wind god Ehecatl was also his alter ego.

Quetzalcoatl in the sense of (2) was the son of the Toltec chief Mishcoatl, who established the prosperity of the Toltec Kingdom with its capital in Tula, and took the name Quetzalcoatl Topiltzin as a priest of the cultural god Quetzalcoatl. Later, he was defeated in a battle with a group of worshippers of the war god Tezcatlipoca and left for the eastern sea. There was a legend that the king promised to return at that time, so when the conqueror Cortes invaded Mexico in 1519, he was considered to be an incarnation of Quetzalcoatl. The god Quetzalcoatl also spread to Mayan culture, where he was worshipped especially under the name Kukulkán. There is a famous temple of Kukulcan in the ruins of Chichen Itza in the northern part of the Yucatan Peninsula.

古代メキシコの重要な文化コンプレックスで、(1)アステカ、トルテカなどの諸文化の宗教・神話において、民衆に文化を授けた神の名であると同時に、(2)10～12世紀に栄えたトルテカ王国に実在した、ケツァルコアトル神を信奉する神官王の名でもあり、さらに(3)古代メキシコのクアウティトランCuautitlánその他の地方でつくられた詩に歌われた文学上の主題の人物名でもある。「羽毛の生えた蛇」を意味する。

　(1)の意味でのケツァルコアトルは、その起源を紀元前数世紀にまでさかのぼることができる。もともと農耕と縁の深い水神であったものが、テオティワカン文化（2～7世紀）において、「羽毛の生えた蛇」として人々の信仰を集め、ケツァルコアトルの神殿がつくられた。その後に続くショチカルコ、トルテカ、アステカ等の文化においてもケツァルコアトルは崇拝され、複雑な属性を備えた神格に変化していった。アステカ期（14～16世紀）につくられたナワトル語の諸テキストでは、ケツァルコアトルは、13層に分かれた天空の第4層に住む金星神に比定され、また最高神トナカテクートリとトナカシワトル（オメテクートリ、オメシワトルともいう）の生んだ4人の子の1人として、宇宙や人間の創造、さらにトウモロコシの獲得に携わった神としても描かれている。またエエカトルという風の神も彼の分身であった。

　(2)の意味でのケツァルコアトルは、トルテカ人の首長ミシュコアトルの子であり、トゥーラに都を置いてトルテカ王国の繁栄を築き上げるとともに、文化神ケツァルコアトルの神官としてケツァルコアトル・トピルツィンを名のった。その後、軍神テスカトリポカを信奉する一派との闘争に敗れて東の海に去った。その際にこの王が再来を約したという伝説があったため、1519年征服者コルテスがメキシコに侵入したとき、ケツァルコアトルの分身とみなされたといわれている。なお、ケツァルコアトル神はマヤ文化にも伝播(でんぱ)し、とくにククルカンKukulkánの名で崇拝された。ユカタン半島北部のチチェン・イツァー遺跡には有名なククルカンの神殿がある。
