It is a city located inland in the southern part of Gangwon Province, South Korea. It has an area of 867.77 square kilometers and a population of 267,849 (2000). The Charyeong Mountains run through the southeast, and the Wonju River, a tributary of the Namhan River, flows through the city, forming a basin. As an inland basin, the city experiences a large annual temperature range (average temperature: maximum 17.3°C, minimum -5.5°C). It produces a lot of rice, wheat, vegetables, and fruit, and cattle farming is also thriving. Light industries such as silk weaving and kudzu wallpaper are well developed, and it has become a transportation hub since the opening of the Suwon-Gangneung national expressway along with the Central Line railway.
