A tool for telling the wind direction. Also called a weather vane. The oldest record is of a statue of Triton, the god of the sea, on the Tower of the Winds in Athens. Western churches have weather vanes, which are said to commemorate the rooster that woke Peter, who had denied his relationship with Christ three times. The parts of the rooster's head and tail exposed to the wind are made unevenly so that the rooster always faces the wind. Other examples include coats of arms and images of strange animals.
