...As soon as the chicks hatch from the eggs and their feathers dry, they leave the nest accompanied by their parents. In Africa, there are three species: the common jacana Microparra capensis , the African jacana Actophilornis africana , and the Madagascar jacana A. albinucha . From Mexico to South America, there is the American jacana Jacana spinosa . From India to Southeast Asia, there are two species: the white-tailed jacana Metopidius indicus , and from Indonesia to New Guinea and Australia, there is the crested jacana Irediparra gallinacea . The pheasant-tailed jacana Hydrophasianus chirurgus (illustration) is found in India, southern China, Taiwan, and the Philippines, and is mostly a resident bird.
