In the Andes mountains of Chile, South America, the European Southern Observatory, already mentioned, was established in La Silla in 1964, the American Association of Astronomical Observatories was established in Cerro Tololo in 1962, and the Las Campanas Observatory, part of the Carnegie Institution for Science, was established in 1971. The former has 4-meter, 1.5-meter, and 1-meter reflecting telescopes and a 60-cm Schmidt telescope, while the latter has 2.5-meter and 1-meter reflecting telescopes, and both are still in use.
