A town in the Warwick district of Warwickshire, central England, the United Kingdom. It is located on a tributary of the River Avon, about 10 km north of the county capital, Warwick. It is famous for its castle, which was built in the 12th century. All that remains of the castle are Caesar's Tower, which has walls about 5 meters thick, and parts of the outer walls and the great hall, but it was often used as a royal castle in the Middle Ages, and Walter Scott's novel Kenilworth (1821) describes the castle in the time of Elizabeth I. During the Puritan Revolution in the mid-17th century, it was sacked by Oliver Cromwell's soldiers and abandoned, and in 1937 it was donated to the country by Lord Kenilworth. It has developed mainly as a residential area, with the industrial area of the Midlands behind it. Population: 22,218 (2001).
