A city in the southwestern tip of Okayama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1952. It is located on a complex alluvial fan, and the Sanyo Main Line runs through the city, which developed as a temple town for Daisen-in Temple, which was built in 1688. In 1965, it was designated as a special industrial development area in Bingo. The large-scale reclamation work on Kasaoka Bay, which continued until 1990, led to the establishment of factories, and the formation of a steel complex that straddles the neighboring city of Fukuyama in Hiroshima Prefecture to the west, as well as the development of food, electrical, and chemical industries. Kibi ware and paulownia geta (wooden clogs) are local specialties. The Sanyo Expressway runs through the city. The Kasaoka Islands off the coast consist of Konoshima, Shiraishijima, and Kitagishima, and are popular for fruit and flower cultivation, and seaweed and oyster farming. Kasaoka Bay is a breeding ground for horseshoe crabs (a natural monument). 136.39 km2 . 54,225 people (2010). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
