…Influenced by Charles Beard and J. H. Robinson, the proponent of the New History movement, he presented a perspective for social history research in New Points in American History (1922). He established the field of social history with the 13 volumes of the History of American Life series (1927-1948), which he edited with DR Fox, and he himself wrote one volume of the series, The Rise of Cities, 1878-1898 (1933). His essay The City in American History, published in 1940, also had a major impact on the development of urban history research. …
