Died: October 26, 1957, Freiburg. Greek poet, novelist and playwright. With a broad education and an open mind, he pursued throughout his life the idea of ​​human freedom. His most famous work is the epic poem Odysseia (1938), a 24-volume, 33,333-line poem based on Homer's work, which depicts the suffering of modern man. His most famous novels include Vios kai politeia tou Alexe Zorba (47), which caused a sensation with its portrayal of Cretan man, O Christos xanastauronetai (55), which exposes the hardships of Greek refugees and the ugly conflicts between fellow countrymen in different positions, and O ftochoulis tou Theou (56). Many of his plays deal with the struggles of historical figures such as Christ and Emperor Julian, and his "Report to Greco" (Anafora ston Greko) (61) is a fragmentary autobiography or posthumous work. He also produced numerous translations of classics and travelogues.
