Triathlon - triathlon

A sport that originated in the United States. One athlete competes in three consecutive events: swimming, biking, and running, competing for time. The time it takes to switch events is also included in the competition time. "Triathlon" is a coined word that combines "tri" which means "three" in Latin and "athlon" which means "competition" in English.

The origin of the triathlon is said to be the "cross sports" that combine several events such as swimming and running that were popular in the San Diego area in the early 1970s. The Mission Bay Triathlon, held on September 25, 1974, was the first event to use the name "triathlon." However, it was very different from the current style, with events being run, bike, and swim in that order.

The basis of the current style is the Ironman. In February 1977, Hawaiian Marine John Collins (1936- ) and others were discussing which of the three events was the greatest, and in order to reach a conclusion, they declared that they would run the 2.4-mile Waikiki Rough Water Swim, the 112-mile cycle race Around Oahu, and the 42.195-kilometer Honolulu Marathon, which were held in Hawaii at the time, consecutively in the next year, and named it the Ironman. Collins had previously participated in the Mission Bay Triathlon, and it is said that this experience was the inspiration for the Ironman. The following year, on February 18, 1978, the Ironman Hawaii was held on the island of Oahu, with 15 participants including Collins himself. Later, in 1980, Ironman Hawaii was broadcast on television across the United States, creating a huge buzz and spreading the sport rapidly, eventually spreading to Oceania and Europe.

The distance of an Ironman race, converted into kilometers, is a 3.8-kilometer swim, 180.2-kilometer bike ride, and 42.2-kilometer run, but in 1983, the then US Triathlon Federation established a "short distance" race of 1.5 kilometers, 40 kilometers bike ride, and 10 kilometers run. This was named so because it was shorter than the traditional Ironman distance, but it was later adopted as an Olympic event and came to be known as the "Olympic distance." This distance is easier to participate in and more competitive, and has become popular with both top athletes and general participants, and is now the distance most commonly held.

In addition, there are four other mainstream standards: the "middle distance" or "Ironman 70.3" with a 1.9 km swim, 90.1 km bike, and 21.1 km run, and the "sprint distance" with a 0.75 km swim, 20 km bike, and 5 km run. However, there are many competitions with unique distance settings that do not fit these standards. Another unique feature of this sport is the style of competition that adapts to the natural conditions of the hosting location.

The first time Japanese people participated in an Ironman was in February 1981 at the 4th Ironman Hawaii tournament, where eight people participated and completed the entire distance. This was reported in a local newspaper in Japan, which prompted Japan's first "Kaike Triathlon" to be held in Tottori Prefecture in August, taking advantage of the advice of the participants. The first tournament consisted of a 2.5 km swim, 70 km bike ride, and 25.5 km run, with 53 people (including two women) completing the course. In 1985, the "All Japan Triathlon Miyakojima Tournament" was held in Miyakojima, Okinawa Prefecture, and NHK broadcast the event on television, albeit intermittently, which gave impetus to the popularity of the event in Japan.

In 1989, the International Triathlon Union (ITU) was founded, and the first ITU World Championships were held in Avignon, France. Triathlon has been an official Olympic event since the Sydney Olympics in 2000, and in Japan since the National Athletic Meet in 2016. As of 2017, about 300 tournaments are held in Japan each year, and the number of enthusiasts is about 400,000. Although it does not have a long history, it is a sport that has steadily grown in popularity and development.

アメリカ発祥のスポーツ。1人の競技者がスイム（水泳）、バイク（自転車）、ラン（ランニング）の3種目を連続して行いタイムを競う。種目を転換する時間も競技時間に含まれる。「トライアスロン」は造語で、ラテン語で「3」を示す「トライ」と英語で「競技」を示す「アスロン」を組み合わせたものである。

　1970年代前半、カリフォルニアのサン・ディエゴ周辺で、泳ぐ、走るといったいくつかの種目を組み合わせて行う「クロススポーツ」が盛んに行われており、これが起源といわれる。なかでも1974年9月25日に行われた「ミッションベイ・トライアスロン」が「トライアスロン」という名称を使った初めての大会である。しかし、ラン、バイク、スイムの順で行われるなど、現在のスタイルとは大きく異なっていた。

　現在のスタイルの基礎となったのは「アイアンマン」である。ハワイの海兵隊員ジョン・コリンズJohn Collins（1936―　）らが、1977年2月、三つの種目の競技者のいずれがもっとも偉大であるかという議論となり、その結論を導き出すべく、当時ハワイで行われていた2.4マイルの「ワイキキ・ラフ・ウォーター・スイム」、112マイルのサイクルレース「アラウンド・オアフ」、42.195キロメートルの「ホノルル・マラソン」のそれぞれの距離を1年後に連続して行うと宣言し、「アイアンマン」と名づけた。コリンズは以前にミッションベイ・トライアスロンに参加しており、その体験がアイアンマンを構想する元となったといわれている。翌1978年2月18日、コリンズ自身を含む15名が参加し、オアフ島を舞台に「アイアンマン・ハワイ」が開催された。その後、1980年のアイアンマン・ハワイが全米にテレビ放映され、大きな話題となり一気に広まり、オセアニア、ヨーロッパへと普及していった。

　アイアンマンの競技距離は、キロメートル単位に換算するとスイム3.8キロメートル、バイク180.2キロメートル、ラン42.2キロメートルであるが、1983年に当時のアメリカトライアスロン連盟が、スイム1.5キロメートル、バイク40キロメートル、ラン10キロメートルの「ショート・ディスタンス」を制定した。これは従来のアイアンマンの距離よりも短いのでこのようによばれたのだが、後にオリンピック種目に採用され、「オリンピック・ディスタンス」という名称でよばれるようになった。この距離はより参加しやすく、また競技性も高まり、トップ選手から一般の参加者まで広く人気を博し、現在ではこの距離の大会がもっとも多く開催されている。

　このほか、スイム1.9キロメートル、バイク90.1キロメートル、ラン21.1キロメートル程度の「ミドル・ディスタンス」もしくは「アイアンマン70.3」、スイム0.75キロメートル、バイク20キロメートル、ラン5キロメートルの「スプリント・ディスタンス」など、おもに4種類の規格が主流となっている。ただし、これに当てはまらない独自の距離設定で行われる大会も少なくない。開催地の自然条件にあわせた大会開催スタイルもこのスポーツならではのものである。

　日本人のアイアンマン初参加は1981年（昭和56）2月の第4回アイアンマン・ハワイ大会で、8名が参加し、完走した。これが国内のローカル紙で報道されたことがきっかけとなり、8月に参加者のアドバイスを生かし、鳥取県で国内初の「皆生(かいけ)トライアスロン」が開催された。第1回大会は、スイム2.5キロメートル、バイク70キロメートル、ラン25.5キロメートルで行われ、53名（うち女性2名）が完走した。1985年、沖縄県宮古島(みやこじま)で「全日本トライアスロン宮古島大会」が開催され、NHKが断続的ながらテレビ中継したことで、日本でも普及に弾みがついた。

　1989年には国際トライアスロン連合（ITU：International Triathlon Union）が設立され、第1回ITU世界選手権大会がフランスのアビニョンで開催された。さらに、2000年のオリンピック・シドニー大会から正式種目となっているほか、国内でも2016年（平成28）の国民体育大会から正式種目になっている。2017年度時点では、日本で年間約300もの大会が開催され、愛好者の人口も約40万人となっている。歴史は長くないが、確実に普及、発展を遂げているスポーツである。
