The area was located in the north shore of the Gulf of Corinth in central ancient Greece. Until the 5th century BCE, it was a backward region with tribal village communities, but after the formation of the Aetolian League, it gained influence. In 27 BCE, it was incorporated into the Roman province of Achaea by Emperor Augustus.
