Water Moth - Brahmaea wallichii
An insect of the Lepidoptera family, Ploceidae (illustration). It is a large moth with a wingspan of about 10 cm. It is found nationwide from Hokkaido to Yakushima. The wings have numerous wavy lines, and the half of the hind wings near the base is black. This family is a small one closely related to the Saturniidae family, and about 15 species are known from Africa, the southern tip of Italy, Southeast Asia to Japan. Only one species of ploce is found in Japan. The Japanese ploce moth emerges in the spring, is nocturnal, and often flies to lights. The larvae feed on the leaves of plants of the Oleaceae family, such as the privet tree, olive tree, ash tree, and Japanese laurel tree.
