Along with the chamber sonata, this is an important sonata form in the Baroque period. It developed from the early canzona and was established in the late 17th century by G. Torelli and A. Corelli. It consists of four movements with different tempos and beats (usually adagio-allegro-adagio-allegro). As its name suggests, it was first used in churches, and is characterized by polyphonic writing and solemn expression compared to the chamber sonata.
