Cold training - Kangyō

Japanese:
Cold training - Kangyō

Practice of asceticism while enduring the suffering of the cold. Also called kanshugyo. For 30 days from the onset of the cold season, people beg for alms, recite sutras, sit in meditation, chant the Nembutsu, and chant the daimoku. This is based on the belief that since the suffering is greater than during the warmer months, the merits are also greater. Parading around the city striking a gong and chanting Nembutsu and wasan is called kan nembutsu, visiting shrines and temples is called kan mairi, and praying to the gods and Buddhas and bathing in water during the cold season is called kangori. Ordinary people sometimes undertake kangyo in order to pray to the gods and Buddhas for mastery of a skill.
