Diversion channel; floodway

Japanese: 放水路 - ほうすいろ（英語表記）diversion channel; floodway

A waterway that directs used water back to the original river or discharges it into the sea, or that diverts water from a river to the sea for flood control purposes. The latter is also called a diversion channel. In rivers that run through large cities, it is often impossible to create a riverbed large enough to discharge floodwaters or build large levees, so diversion and discharge are carried out for the safety and maintenance of the river.

使った水をもとの河川に導いたり，海へ放流するための水路，あるいは洪水処理の目的で河川から海へ分流させる水路。後者は分水路ともいわれる。大都市を貫流する河川では，洪水流量を流すのに十分な河川敷をとったり，大きな堤防を造ることが不可能な場合が多いので，河川の安全と維持管理のため，分派と放水を行う。
