During the Carolingian period, mosaics were said to have been applied to the court chapel of Aachen (now the cathedral), but they no longer exist. The mosaic (799-818) representing the Ark of the Covenant (Exodus 25) in the chapel of Germigny-des-Prés is the only surviving example from this period (heavy influence from Ravenna).
