Name of an ancient Indian kingdom and region. Located in the western part of present-day Madhya Pradesh, its capital city was Ujjaini (Ujjaini). Located at the center of the transportation route from the Ganges River basin to the Deccan Plateau in the south and the Arabian Sea coast in the west, it was an important area from an early period in terms of politics, economy, and culture. During the time of Buddha (6th to 5th centuries BC), one of the five great kingdoms, along with Magadha, flourished here, and later became the base of many kingdoms, large and small.
