〘noun〙 A type of sound change. The phenomenon in which various sounds in or at the end of words, such as "ku," "gu," "hi," "bi," and "mi," become the "u" sound for the sake of pronunciation. This is the same as "yoku (good)" becoming "you," "kaguhashi" becoming "kaubashi," "otohito (younger brother)" becoming "ototo," "yokonite" becoming "yode," and "tadamete" becoming "yorau de." This emerged in the early Heian period and has become more common since then. In modern standard Japanese, the conjunctive forms of adjectives often appear with "gozaimasu" (god), "zonjimasu" (zonjimasu), and so on, when followed by "yo." The conjunctive forms of verbs rarely appear in standard Japanese, but are common in the Kansai dialect. [Kokugogaku (1891)] [Additional Notes] The sound change was already explained by Motoori Norinaga in his "Thoughts on the Three Sounds of Kanji," and includes cases such as "U and other sound changes," such as "make" becoming "mauke," "eight days (yaka) " becoming "yauka," "and then" becoming "shikashite," and "husband and wife" becoming "fuufu." The term "U sound change" became widespread in the latter half of the Meiji period.
