Puja (English spelling) pūjā

Japanese: プージャー(英語表記)pūjā
Puja (English spelling) pūjā
A ritual of worship of a deity in Hinduism. Its core is a ritual of offering directly to the deity and worshipping it. It contrasts with the yajña, a ritual based on the Brahmanic tradition, which is centered on offering offerings to the deity through a sacred fire and sacrificing to the gods. Its form varies from simple daily offerings of water, food, flowers, etc. to the deity at home, to detailed rituals performed by priests at temples and festivals. The basic method is to offer offerings to the deity in the same way as to entertain guests, and it is best to follow the Vedic ritual of offering guests a drink mixed with honey (the word puja comes from the Sanskrit prīthi pṛc, which means to mix and offer this madhuparka).
