An astronomical telescope used to determine the precession, nutation, and aberration constants of the Earth's axis. It takes intermittent photographs of a faint star of about magnitude 10 within 1° of the North Pole (the plate is rotated in accordance with the diurnal motion during exposure), and from these the apparent position on the celestial sphere of the direction of the Earth's axis of rotation is measured.
