In the narrow sense, it refers to potassium alum, KAl(SO ₄ ) ₂ ·12H ₂ O, and simply speaking alum refers to this. In general, it refers to a double salt in which Na(+/), NH ₄ (+/), Rb(+/), Cs(+/), Tl(+/), etc. are combined in ^{place of K} (+/), and it is called sodium alum, ammonium alum, etc. depending on the type of substituted cation. All are colorless octahedral crystals with properties similar to potassium alum. In a broader sense, it also includes those in which other trivalent metals such as Ga ³ (+/), In ³ (+/), Ti ³ (+/), V ³ (+/), Cr ³ (+/), Mn ³ (+/), Fe ³ (+/), Co ³ (+/), etc. are combined in place of Al 3 (+/) (chrome alum, iron alum). 狭義にはカリミョウバンKAl（SO₄）₂・12H₂Oをいい，単にミョウバンといえばこれをさす。一般にはK(+/)の代りにNa(+/)，NH₄(+/)，Rb(+/)，Cs(+/)，Tl(+/)などが結合した複塩をいい，代りになった陽イオンの種類によりそれぞれナトリウムミョウバン，アンモニウムミョウバンなどと呼ぶ。いずれも正八面体の無色の結晶で，カリミョウバンに似た性質をもつ。さらに広義にはAl³(+/)の代りに他の３価の金属のGa³(+/)，In³(+/)，Ti³(+/)，V³(+/)，Cr³(+/)，Mn³(+/)，Fe³(+/)，Co³(+/)などが入ったものも含めていう（クロムミョウバン，鉄ミョウバン）。これらには有色のものもあるが，いずれも正八面体の水に溶ける結晶。またTlCr（SeO₄）₂・12H₂Oのように硫酸基の代りにセレン酸基の入ったものをセレンミョウバンという。
