A Tendai Buddhist monk from the late Heian period. He was called Ichijoji Sojo. He was the son of Gon Dainagon Fujiwara Tsunesuke. He became a monk at the age of six at Onjoji Temple, and performed ascetic practices at Mt. Omine and Mt. Katsuragi. He served as a guardian monk for two emperors, Emperor Shirakawa and Emperor Horikawa, and achieved success through his religious skills. In 1086, he became Gon Daisozu. In 1090, he guided Emperor Shirakawa on his pilgrimage to Kumano, and was appointed as the first inspector of the three Kumano mountains, and built Shogoin Temple in Kyoto's eastern area. In 1100, he became the abbot of Onjoji Temple, and in 1105, he became the Tendai Zasu (the 39th head priest, who declined the next day due to opposition from the Sanmon sect), Daisojo, and also served as the head priest of 13 temples. He established his position by gaining the faith of the temple through both religious services and ascetic practices.

平安後期の天台宗の僧。一乗寺僧正と号す。権大納言藤原経輔の子。6歳のときに園城寺で出家し,大峰, 葛城両山で苦行した。白河天皇,堀河天皇2代の護持僧を勤め,法験を発揮して栄達の道を歩む。応徳3(1086)年に権大僧都。寛治4(1090)年に白河上皇の熊野詣の先達を勤め,初めて熊野三山検校に補され,洛東に聖護院を建立。康和2(1100)年に園城寺長吏,長治2(1105)年に天台座主(第39世,山門派の反対で翌日辞退),大僧正となり,13カ寺の別当も兼ねた。加持祈祷と修験の両面で院の信仰を得て,その地位を築いた。
