1568‐1644 Pope of the Roman Empire. Reigned 1623-44. Born into the distinguished Barberini family of Florence, he had a deep knowledge of the arts and sciences. He was appointed cardinal in 1606, bishop of Spoleto in 1608, papal legate of Bologna in 1617, and pope in 1623. He was an enthusiastic reformer of the church, canonizing many saints and establishing the Law of Consecration, approving new religious orders such as the Society of the Visitation of St. Mary and the Lazarists of Vincent de Paul, founding the Urban University for evangelization, revising the Breviary, and banning Jansen's book Augustine.
