Pope of the Roman Empire. Reigned 1623-44. Born into the distinguished Barberini family of Florence, he had a deep knowledge of the arts and sciences. He was appointed cardinal in 1606, bishop of Spoleto in 1608, papal legate of Bologna in 1617, and pope in 1623. He was an enthusiastic reformer of the church, canonizing many saints and establishing the Law of Consecration, approving new religious orders such as the Society of the Visitation of St. Mary and the Lazarists of Vincent de Paul, founding the Urban University for evangelization, revising the Breviary, and banning Jansen's book Augustine.

ローマ教皇。在位1623‐44年。フィレンツェの名門バルベリニ家の出身で学芸･美術に造詣が深く，1606年枢機卿，08年スポレト司教，17年ボローニャの教皇特使，23年教皇となる。多くの聖人を列聖して聖別法を制定，聖マリア訪問童貞会やバンサン･ド･ポールのラザリスト会などの新修道会の認可，伝道のためのウルバノ大学の設立，聖務日課書の改訂，ヤンセンの著書《アウグスティヌス》の発禁など，教会改革には熱心であった。
