Maneuvering warhead. The missile warheads of ICBMs and SLBMs generally travel on a free trajectory outside the atmosphere and re-enter the atmosphere, but are controlled by aerodynamic wings, rudders, or rocket thrust to perform a predetermined maneuver to avoid anti-ballistic missiles (ABMs), or by terminal guidance to improve the accuracy of the warhead's hit. Trident missiles deployed in combat since 1980 have been equipped with this type of warhead.
