A type of puzzle game in which players follow hints to create and fit interconnected words into answer columns set into a grid of squares. Simple versions appeared in children's magazines in the 19th century, but it wasn't until A. Wynne began serializing it in the Sunday edition of the New York World every week from December 21, 1913 that it became popular in the form we know today. It became popular and quickly spread around the world. It was introduced to Japan before World War II, and became popular around 1955. It became popular again around 1990, and specialized magazines are now being published.
