Azuchi-Momoyama culture

The culture of the Azuchi-Momoyama period, when Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi held power. Although it lasted only about 30 years, the vigorous lifestyle of the feudal lords and samurai who survived the Sengoku period, and the townspeople who advanced overseas and accumulated wealth, gave rise to a magnificent lifestyle and a bold culture that responded to the demands of that spirit. The construction of many castles, sub-temples, and mansions, such as Azuchi Castle, Osaka Castle (→ Osaka Castle), Fushimi Castle, Nishi Honganji Hiunkaku, and Daitokuji Karamon, were the sites of cultural and artistic activity in this period, and architecture (castles, shoin-zukuri, etc.), painting (folding screen paintings, etc.), sculpture (reliefs, openwork carvings, etc.), various crafts associated with these, and performing arts (tea ceremony, flower arrangement, Noh, etc.) were also expressed in connection with the trends of the time. It was also influenced by Christian culture and trade with Nanban.

織田信長，豊臣秀吉が政権を握った安土桃山時代の文化。約 30年間にすぎないが，戦国時代を生き抜いた大名や武士，さらに海外に進出して蓄財した町人らの旺盛な生活意識が豪壮絢爛たる生活様式を生み，その精神の求めに応じる雄渾な文化を生んだ。安土城，大坂城（→大阪城），伏見城，西本願寺飛雲閣，大徳寺唐門など多くの居城，塔頭，邸宅の築造がこの時代の文化的芸術的活動の場であり，建築（城郭，書院造など），絵画（障屏画など），彫刻（浮彫，透かし彫など），これに伴う諸工芸，そして芸能（茶道，花道〈生け花〉，能など）もこの時代の風潮に結びついて表現された。さらにキリシタン文化，南蛮貿易の影響も受けている。
