Pharmacology has developed as the study of medicine since the time of ancient Egyptian civilization, but it has made great strides as experimental pharmacology since the German Oswald Schmiedeberg (1838-1921), who is considered the father of modern pharmacology, introduced a method of experimentally observing the effects of drugs, mainly using parts of animal organs. In Japan, the beginning of pharmacology is said to be in 1885, when the Department of Pharmacology was opened at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Tokyo.
