It is also said that when a great fire broke out on Mount Akiba, Sanjakubo appeared and, having practiced Kashou-Zanmai, stopped the raging flames, and so he was worshiped as a fire prevention guardian deity. …At Akiba-dera, goma fires are lit and fire-walking is performed, and a ceremony of offering 75 meals to various Tengu is held. The being commonly known as Akiba Sanjakubo is considered to be a Tengu, and is closely linked to the character of Akiba faith as a fire-prevention deity. Although the propagation of Akiba Shugendo cannot be ignored in the spread of Akiba faith to various places, it is thought to have spread with the character of a fad deity, as seen in the rapid spread of Akiba faith in the city of Edo, which was plagued by fires in the mid-Edo period, and in 1685 (Jokyo 2), the shogunate also prohibited the transfer of Akiba Gongen one after another in villages. …
