Kakubetsu Castle - Kakubetsu Castle

Japanese: 覚鱉城 - かくべつじょう

An ancient Japanese fortress. Following Monou Castle in 758 (Tenpyo Hoji 2), Iji Castle was built in 767 (Jingo Keiun 1) at the northernmost tip of Miyagi Prefecture. The next target for the Ritsuryo government to acquire territory was the Isawa region in the north, i.e., southern Iwate Prefecture. Thus, 13 years after Iji Castle, in 780 (Hōki 11), the construction of Kaku-no-jo Castle was discussed. At the same time, a peasant's house in Nagaoka (Furukawa City, Miyagi Prefecture), south of Iji Castle, was burned down by bandits, and construction became even more urgent. In March of the same year, the inspector Ki Hirozumi personally supervised the construction of the castle, but he was killed in a rebellion by Iji Azamaro, a native of the Emishi, so it is unclear whether it was completed or not.

日本古代の城柵。758年(天平宝字2)の桃生（ものう）城についで767年(神護景雲1)に宮城県最北端に伊治城が造られると，次には北の胆沢（いさわ）の地つまり岩手県南部が，律令政府にとって領土獲得の対象となった。そこで伊治城から13年遅れて780年(宝亀11)に覚鱉城築城の議がもち上がった。おりしも伊治城より南の長岡(宮城県古川市)の百姓家が賊に焼かれる事件が起こり，造営はいよいよ急を要した。同年3月に按察使（あぜち）紀広純が直接築城の指揮を行ったが，蝦夷出身の伊治呰麻呂（あざまろ）の反乱にあい，殺害されるという事件があったので，完成したものかどうか不明である。
