The capital of Amur Oblast in southeastern Russia. It is a river port city located at the confluence of the Zeya River and the Amur River, with the Chinese city of Heihe (Black River) on the opposite bank of the Amur River. A fortress was built in 1856, and it has since developed into one of the centers of the Russian Far East. Industries include agricultural product processing (flour milling, oils and fats, alcohol brewing), wood processing (matches, furniture), textiles, machinery (gold mining machinery, electrical equipment), shipbuilding, and ship repair. A key transportation location, it is the main river port on the Amur River, and is connected to Svobodny and Khabarovsk by a branch line from the Trans-Siberian Railway at Belogorsk in the northeast.
