Also called a prominence. A gas body located several thousand to tens of thousands of kilometers above the surface of the Sun. It is so named because it looks like a red flame even to the naked eye during a total solar eclipse. When observing the Sun with monochromatic light from the Hα line of the hydrogen spectrum, it appears as a dark, elongated line on the solar surface, so it is also called a dark streak. It is broadly divided into cryptic prominences and active region prominences. The former have little change in shape over time, and the prominence material moves downward, and some appear to flow down from the corona. The latter have a large change in shape over time and are tall. Other special types include surge prominences that erupt like a pillar of fire, and loop prominences.

プロミネンスとも。太陽表面から数千〜数万kmの高さにあるガス体。皆既日食のとき肉眼でも赤い炎のように見えるのでこの名がある。水素スペクトルのHα線の単色光で太陽を観測すると，太陽面上に暗い細長い筋となって見えるので暗条ともいう。静隠型紅炎と活動域型紅炎に大別される。前者は形状の時間的変化が少ないもので，紅炎物質は下降運動をしており，コロナから流下するように見えるものもある。後者は形状が時間的に大きく変化し背丈が高い。そのほか特別な型として，火柱のように噴出するサージ型紅炎やループ型紅炎がある。
