An old town in Yoshiki County in northern Gifu Prefecture. It occupies a large part of the Furukawa Basin, and its main settlement, Furukawa, is a stopover on the Etchu Nishi Kaido road linking Takayama and Toyama, and developed as a distribution and stopover point for goods from the Furukawa Basin. The Takayama Main Line runs through the town, and woodworking is thriving. There is Keta Wakamiya Shrine, famous for its "okoshi taiko" drums, and a ski resort. In February 2004, it merged with Kawai Village, Miyagawa Village, and Kamioka Town in Yoshiki County to form Hida City. 97.44 km2 . Population 16,462 (2003). 岐阜県北部,吉城(よしき)郡の旧町。古川盆地の大部分を占め,主集落古川は高山と富山を結ぶ越中の西街道の中継地で,古川盆地の物資の集散地・中継地として発達。高山本線が通じ,木工業が盛ん。〈起こし太鼓〉で有名な気多(けた)若宮神社,スキー場がある。2004年2月吉城郡河合村,宮川村,神岡町と合併し,飛騨市となる。97.44km2。1万6462人(2003)。
