A Chinese literati from the Eastern Jin Dynasty. His courtesy name was Jingchun. He was from Wenxi County (Shanxi Province). He was erudite and gifted in poetry and prose, and was highly valued by influential people at the time. He became a military secretary to Wang Dun (266-324), who contributed to the founding of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, but was killed for opposing Wang Dun's rebellion. The main biography in the Book of Jin (volume 72) records his outstanding abilities, especially in the five elements, astronomy, and divination. He was also a first-class poet, and his representative work, Poems for Visiting Immortals (14 poems), is highly regarded for its depth as a philosophical poem that seeks immortals from a Taoist perspective. As a scholar, he annotated works such as Erya, Fangyan, Mu Tianzi Zhuan, and Shanhai Jing, many of which are still of use today.
