An element is an ultimate factor (atomic species) of matter that is determined by a specific atomic number (number of protons or number of nuclear charges). Atomic Number There are 107 known elements, ranging from 1 to 10 (Table 1-I, II, III, IV, V). To avoid confusion with the term element (sometimes written as atomic element) when used in a different sense, they are sometimes called chemical elements. Among real substances (molecular species), the properties of a particular element are expressed in a wide variety of forms, but the origin of these properties is determined by the atomic number, and all of the properties specific to a given element can be traced back to its atomic number.
