Jing Hao (English spelling)

Japanese: 荆浩 - けいこう（英語表記）Jīng Hào

A Chinese landscape painter from the late Tang Dynasty period. Dates of birth and death unknown. His pen name was Haoran. He was from Qinshui, Shanxi Province. He was a Confucian scholar well versed in classics and history, but to avoid the chaos of war he retreated to Honggu in the Taihang Mountains and took the name Hongguzi. He painted landscapes, trees and stones, and called himself the master of both Wu Daozi's and Xiang Rong's brushwork. One of his renowned works is Snow Landscape (Nelson Art Museum), which bears the signature of Hongguzi, and the depiction of the spirit of the mountains and stones shows elements in common with his disciple Guan Tong. His painting theory in the Book of Brushworks has also been passed down, making him a valuable resource for the study of landscape painting during the transitional period between the Tang and Song dynasties.

中国，唐末五代の山水画家。生没年不詳。字は浩然。山西省沁水（しんすい）の人。経史にひろく通じた儒者であったが，戦乱を避け太行山の洪谷に隠れ，洪谷子と号した。山水，樹石を描き，呉道子の用筆と項容の用筆の長を兼ねると自称した。伝称作品に洪谷子の款を有する《雪景山水図》(ネルソン美術館)があり，山石の気勢表現に弟子の関仝（かんどう）と共通する要素がみられる。また《筆法記》の画論が伝わり，唐･宋変革期の山水画研究の貴重な資料である。
