Located in central France, this canal connects the Yonne and Loire rivers, both tributaries of the Seine. Planned during the reign of Louis XIII, it was actually constructed between 1784 and 1842, stretching a total length of 174.5 km from Auxerre on the Yonne to Deucise on the Loire. The section that passes through the hilly area that forms the watershed is at an altitude of 265 m, with an elevation difference of 162 m from Auxerre and 66 m from Deucise. For this reason, there are a total of 116 locks on both sides. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
