A multipurpose dam on the Nile River, 5 km south of the city of Aswan, Egypt. Completed in 1902, it was renovated and expanded in 1912 and 1934. It is a buttress dam with a length of 2,140 m, a height of 51 m, and a storage capacity of 5.5 billion cubic meters , and is used for irrigation and power generation (annual power generation of 1.86 billion kWh). It increased cotton production in Egypt, but the water storage capacity was insufficient in drought years, so the Aswan High Dam was later built. →Related topics Aswan Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
