Polish painter. In Polish, his name is Grodgel. After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, he went to Vienna in 1854 to study at the Academy. He worked as an illustrator and editor for local magazines. He produced portraits and small genre paintings that reflected the political situation in Poland, but his series of drawings depicting the courage and tragedy of the oppressed people of his homeland (for example, a work from 1863, the year of the January Uprising) became widely known through print and boosted Polish patriotism.

ポーランドの画家。ポーランド語ではグロドゲル。クラクフの美術学校を経て1854年ウィーンにおもむき，アカデミーで学ぶ。当地の雑誌の挿絵画家また編集者として活躍。肖像画やポーランドの政治的状況を反映した小画面の風俗画もあるが，抑圧された祖国の民衆を主人公に，その勇気と悲劇を描いた素描連作群(たとえば，一月蜂起の勃発した1863年の作)は印刷物を通して人口に膾炙（かいしや）し，ポーランド人の愛国心を高揚せしめた。
