1837‐67 Polish painter. In Polish, his name is Grodgel. After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, he went to Vienna in 1854 to study at the Academy. He worked as an illustrator and editor for local magazines. He produced portraits and small genre paintings that reflected the political situation in Poland, but his series of drawings depicting the courage and tragedy of the oppressed people of his homeland (for example, a work from 1863, the year of the January Uprising) became widely known through print and boosted Polish patriotism.
