A pass over the Alps in southern Switzerland, going from the Rhône River valley to Italy. It is 2005m above sea level. In Italian, it is called Sempione. A road was built at the command of Napoleon from 1800 to 1807. In 1906, the Simplon I Tunnel, a single-track tunnel with a length of 19.80 km, was opened to the northeast of the pass, and in 1922, the Simplon II Tunnel with a length of 19.82 km was opened in parallel.
