Since it is a device for catching icefish, in waka poetry it is written as a combination of "icefish" (hi) and "day" (hi means to catch icefish), with "yoru" (to come) as a related word. It is often included in poems by women lamenting the end of men's nightly visits, such as the poem "Kanenari no mi wo uuji kawa no ashirogi ni mukare mo hi shi tsuru ka (unknown author)" (Love 3, 843) from the "Shuishū".
