A former town in Iwate County in the northwest of Iwate Prefecture. Araya-Shinmachi on the Hanawa Line is the center. Flower cultivation, tobacco leaf crops, and other field crops are thriving. Beef cattle are also produced and mushrooms are cultivated. The Tohoku Expressway runs through the town, and the Hachinohe Expressway branches off from it. The southwestern part belongs to Towada-Hachimantai National Park. In April 2002, it was transferred from Ninohe County to Iwate County. In September 2005, it merged with Nishine Town and Matsuo Village in Iwate County to become a city, Hachimantai City. 460.24 km2 . 6,405 people (2003). 岩手県北西部,岩手郡の旧町。花輪線の荒屋新町が中心。花卉(かき)栽培,葉タバコなどの畑作が盛ん。肉牛の生産,キノコ類の栽培も行う。東北自動車道が通じ,八戸自動車道が分岐する。南西部は十和田八幡平(はちまんたい)国立公園に属する。2002年4月二戸郡から岩手郡に変更。2005年9月,岩手郡西根町,松尾村と合併し市制,八幡平市となる。460.24km2。6405人(2003)。
