Generally, it means a performance for the Emperor, but it specifically refers to the kabuki that was held on April 26, 1887 at the residence of Count Inoue Kaoru, Minister of Foreign Affairs. The plays included "Kanjincho" (Ichikawa Danjūrō IX, Ichikawa Sadanji 1, Nakamura Fukusuke IV), "Takatoki" (Danjūrō), "Mitsu Sanban" (Onoue Kikugorō V), as well as "Fisherman's Moon Viewing," "Genroku Flower Viewing Dance," "Soga no Juban Slash," and "Yamauba." The plays were changed over four days, and Emperor Meiji attended on the first day and the Empress on the second day. It was the single largest event organized by the Theater Improvement Association, which was led by Suematsu Kenchō and others, and is said to have raised the social status of theater people (→ Theater Improvement Movement).
