Solo, also called Solo. A city in the eastern part of Javatenga Province, central Java, Indonesia. It is located on the eastern foot of Mount Merapi (2,911m) in the wide river valley plain of the Solo River. It was part of the Mataram Kingdom, but even after the Dutch rule it remained as a sultanate, and even today, self-governance is permitted within the vast royal palace grounds. In the surrounding plains, rice, tobacco, sugarcane, cassava, coconut palm, etc. are cultivated, and they are also collected, distributed, and processed. The main products are batik, as well as handicrafts such as pots and woodwork. It is connected to other parts of the island by rail and road. During the Indonesian War of Independence, it was a base for the left wing, and later it was the headquarters of the Communist Party. Population 469,888 (1980).
