Azil culture

A culture from the early Mesolithic period in Western Europe. It is found mainly in southern France and northern Spain. This culture was born in response to the large-scale climate change that occurred in Western Europe during the Holocene. In the second half of the 19th century, when the understanding of Paleolithic cultures was just beginning, a previously unknown artifact was discovered at the Mas d'Azil site in France, and it was recognized as a Mesolithic culture that connected the Paleolithic and Neolithic cultures. It inherited the traditions of the Magdalenian culture of the late Paleolithic period as it was, and among Mesolithic cultures, it is the culture that most strongly retains the traditions of the Paleolithic culture. Compared to the Magdalenian culture, both the variety and processing of stone tools and bone and horn tools are inferior. A special artifact is painted gravel. This is a gravel with geometric line patterns painted with red pigment. There are various theories about its purpose, but many scholars believe it was for religious ceremonies.

西ヨーロッパの中石器時代初頭の文化。フランス南部，スペイン北部を中心に分布している。完新世に大規模な気候変化が起った西ヨーロッパで，この環境変化に対応して生れた文化である。 19世紀の後半，旧石器文化の解明がやっと緒についたとき，フランスのマス・ダジール遺跡で従来まったく知られていなかった遺物が発見され，旧石器文化と新石器文化の間をつなぐ中石器文化のものと認められた。後期旧石器時代のマドレーヌ文化の伝統をそのまま受継ぎ，中石器文化のなかでは，旧石器文化の伝統を最も色濃く残している文化である。石器，骨角器ともにマドレーヌ文化に比べると種類も加工も劣っている。特殊な遺物として彩礫がある。これは礫に幾何学線文を赤色顔料で描いたものであり，用途についてはさまざまな説が出されているが，宗教上の儀礼用のものと考える学者が多い。
