…In his symphonies, as shown by the examples of “Spring” and “Rhein” (No. 3), there was a tendency to “say hello to program music” (Einstein) (though the composer did not give them such titles), but as the “No. 2” and “No. 4” (1851) clearly show, he did not depart from the orthodox path that had been followed since Beethoven, and succeeded in filling the structure with fresh poetry. As a critic, he founded the magazine “Neue Zeitschrift für Musik” in 1834, which continues to this day, and played a leading role in the “new poetic era” with his fresh and energetic activities. Schumann is also notable among the great composers for his dedication to music for young children. …
