Rochus

Japanese: ロクス(英語表記)Rochus
Rochus
A Christian saint who lived from about 1295 to about 1327. He was born in Montpellier in the south of France. According to legend, he nursed many plague patients in northern Italy on his pilgrimage to Rome. He himself became infected, but was saved by an angel and a dog. He was later arrested on false charges and died in prison. He was believed to protect people from infectious diseases such as the plague, and was widely worshiped in Western Europe from the 15th century onwards. When depicted in art, he is generally depicted as a pilgrim wearing a hat and cloak, carrying a staff and a bag, with the hems of his clothes rolled up to reveal the plague wounds on his legs, and accompanied by a dog.
