A rather large perennial plant of the orchid family. It grows in forests and wetlands along streams in low mountains throughout Japan, including the Kanto region. It has a rhizome that runs horizontally underground, which is about 50 cm tall and green with a purple base. It has several leaves, which are broadly elliptical and about 10 cm long, and the lower ones are larger. The base of the leaf embraces the stem in a sheath shape. In early summer, about 10 yellowish-brown flowers bloom sparsely at the top of the stem. The bracts at the base of each flower are prominent. The flower is somewhat cup-shaped, with the three outer tepals being bright persimmon green while the inner tepals are pale, and the lip has dark spots.
