Sepik River (English spelling)

Japanese: セピック[川]（英語表記）Sepik

The second largest river in Papua New Guinea. It is 1,126 km long. It originates near Telefomin in the New Guinea Central Highlands near the Indonesian border, flows northwest at first, then flows north along the border, and flows east through the Sepik Basin on the north side of the Central Highlands from about 4° south latitude, and empties into the Bismarck Sea about 80 km east of Wewak. Most of the river can be traveled upstream, and there is almost no elevation change especially in the middle and lower reaches, as it meanders through a vast floodplain. It has many lakes, including Lake Chambuli, and the surrounding area becomes a large marsh during the rainy season from December to January.

パプア･ニューギニア第2の大河。延長1126km。インドネシア国境に近いニューギニア中央高地テレフォミン付近を水源とし，はじめ北西流，国境沿いに北流し，南緯4゜付近からは中央高地北側のセピック盆地を東流，ウェワクの東80km付近でビズマーク海に注ぐ。川の大部分は遡行可能で，特に中流から下流は高度差がほとんどなく，広大な氾濫原を蛇行しながら流れる。チャンブリ湖をはじめ多くの湖沼をもち，12～1月の雨季には付近は大湿原と化する。
